Mr. Berrio started his career working for his family-owned businesses. First, he managed the finance department of Alimentos Napoli, a CPG company with over 80 employees located in Colombia. He led the company sale to an international group. After the sale, he took on an asset manager role at Inversiones Berrio and started building the family office investments practice.
In parallel, he took on a Portfolio Manager role at Bricapital in 2012 and lead the first negotiations and investments of the Colombian Fund which successfully raised $32M from local pension funds, the Colombian Development Bank and HNWI.
In 2013 Mr. Berrio joined Terranum Hotels as an Investment Director where he participated in the largest hospitality leveraged buyout in the Latin America. Besides the acquisition, his team structured deals in excess of US$400m.
In 2015 Mr Berrio joined Edupol, a socially driven startup providing e-learning services in Colombia, as a head of strategy, planning and CFO. He developed the company’s growth strategy, helped to streamline its operations and implemented institutional reporting practices, which were instrumental to raise funds from Impact Investing Funds such as Acumen.
In 2016 Mr. Berrio, while still serving on the board of his family office, he started investing as an Angel Investor and joined HEC Paris MBA. During the program, he joined Hardware Club, a community-based Venture Capital Fund with offices in Paris, San Francisco and Tokyo.
While he is passionate about making an impact as an angel investor at early-stage companies with big ideas and forward-thinking visions, he decided to leverage eight years of experience in Private Equity and Corporate Finance to help aspiring entrepreneurs and later stage startups lead to a clear growth and exit.
Thus in 2017, Diego founded BrightSky Ventures (BSV), his own Venture Capital Fund and “CFO/Exit-as-a-service” practice to supports founders with international ambitions. He incubated the idea at Hardware Club where he became its first Entrepreneur in Residence (EiR).
In 2018 and after expanding BSV’s operations to Israel and Canada. Mr. Berrio and his team joined forces with Starta Ventures -a New York based fund- to launch special acceleration and growth programs and raise additional follow-on venture funds. Such initiatives focus on later stage startups (late seed, Series A, B) that are eager to expand between developed (USA and Western Europe) and emerging markets (Latin America and Eastern Europe).
Mr. Berrio holds MBA degree from HEC Paris (France) where he was awarded an Excellence Scholarship. He also holds a certificate in Financial Management and a B.S. in Economics from Universidad de los Andes (national top rank University in Bogota, Colombia).
